What role/influence did greek gods have in Ancient Greek theatre?

I know that the god of theatre was Dionysus and that a festival was held in honor. I'm more specifically interested in how did they shape and influence the plays themselves. What role did they play exactly within the plays? Any book/web references would be greatly appreciated.
