Are many mental health professionals here familiar with injustices faced by the mentally disabled in court?

It's the criminal courts I'm speaking of, and injustices suffered by those who are not represented by a lawyer (because they can't afford one and the court wrongly believes that the defendants can represent themselves). What organizations are speaking for those who can't speak for themselves? What changes are they pushing for? Generally, lawyers are ignorant of the issue, or more likely, are unwilling to disagree with the status quo - remember when a man wouldn't be prosecuted for raping his wife?
