How to dissolve a relationship with unwilling partner?

were on section 8 and he's on the lease... he is verbally, emotionally, psychologically abusive and controlling and threatening. I would like him to leave on friendly terms. He wont leave. Although, were unmarried we've been together for 23 years. We have 3 children: 19, 16, and 4. We argue, he yells at me in front of the kids. We don't get along, and he won't leave. How do I dissolve the relationship. What is the best way to go about it?
