Why are Maenads portrayed as wicked or evil?

even in the older mythologies the maenad were viewed as somewhat dangerous. They could get caught up so much in their partying that they could hurt animals or themselves. They are the raving ones and could be violent. I don't know about True Blood. But the Maenad of myth are not all just happy drunks
